According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), battery leakage can occur due to chemical reactions inside the battery, especially when they are not in use. Alkaline batteries, in particular, are susceptible to leaking when they are near the end of their life cycle or if they are subjected to extreme temperatures.
The underlying mechanism involves the degradation of the battery’s internal components over time. When batteries are left in devices, they can experience a slow buildup of gas, which increases pressure inside the battery casing. Eventually, this pressure can cause the casing to rupture, leading to leakage of corrosive materials. If these materials come into contact with electronic components, they can cause irreversible damage and significantly decrease the lifespan of the device. Therefore, removing batteries from unused devices not only preserves the integrity of the batteries themselves but also protects the devices from potential harm.
